Vietnam U20 after Three Straight Losses: Is 'Learning' a Hollow Apology?

Another bitter lesson for Vietnamese youth football. I have witnessed such scenes many times – from the 2026 World Cup in Russia, where defending champions Germany exited after the group stage, to today’s long road of Vietnamese youth football. No one wants to hear excuse-laden laments, but we also cannot accept apologies wrapped in the phrase "gaining experience." Head coach Yutaka Ikeuchi, expected to infuse the young squad with Japanese philosophy, did not hide his regret. "We had calculated goals but could not achieve them," he said. The Japanese coach called this failure a "stepping stone" and expressed faith in the players’ long-term development potential, adding that they lacked experience against top-level opponents. Captain Nguyen Quoc Khanh apologized to fans and "future U20 generations" – a detail that shows awareness of a long chain of responsibility. The apology is noble and responsible. But it does not answer the structural question: how was this generation prepared? People call football a passion; I say passion also needs a balance sheet. Looking at this qualification round as an investment, data shows Vietnam U20 created no value: three matches, three losses, bottom of the group. That reality reflects how Vietnamese youth players are losing to peers from Iran – a football nation investing heavily in youth competitions. I remember analyzing 37 matches of Hanoi FC to calculate cost-effectiveness. I don’t argue with prejudice; I let 37 matches speak. But with only three matches in this qualifier, the sample is too small – yet that reveals the real issue: the lack of a long chain of competitive matches. Youth football cannot grow through three matches a year. Compare with South Korea, Japan, Australia: they have J.League, K-League, and hundreds of international matches before reaching U20 level. Meanwhile, Vietnam U20... they lack individualized development pathways, quality minutes, and suitable opposition. When these are missing, failure is inevitable, not accidental. Many will say we need time. I agree. But "learning from failure" cannot be a mantra. Why? Because after dozens of failed qualification cycles, Vietnamese youth football still repeats the same script. If experience were the best teacher, we should have improved long ago. Instead, we are still learning the alphabet. I trust spreadsheets more than promises on the pitch. Today, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi’s promise of a "complete and potential generation" is necessary to ease frustration. But if in three years we still see three straight losses in the qualifiers, who should we look at? Not the young players, but the system that failed to provide enough "growth matches." Fairly, Ikeuchi’s students faced superior opponents – not only Iran but also other group rivals. Their play revealed huge gaps in technique and tactical thinking when forced to defend constantly. But the responsibility should not fall on players who were not ready. They are victims of a lack of systematic investment in academies, domestic youth leagues, and international tours. Captain Nguyen Quoc Khanh apologized to "future U20 generations," knowing that future generations will again face pressure. But his apology – brave as it is – will be wasted if football budget holders do not treat it as a wake-up call. So the question at the end of this qualifying round is not "how did Vietnam U20 lose?" but "what metrics will we use to measure a generation’s development?" International matches? U20 minutes in V-League? Or will we continue using apologies as a unit of measurement?
